He also understood the meanings behind words, a feat which was uncommon for birds. For example, when you hear the word “grape” it would be clear that it was a fruit and not a vegetable. Dr. Pepperberg taught Alex words in a manner that made him comprehend the meaning of them. She and an associate would play the role of students and teachers, and Alex observed the actions and listened to the explanations. When he listened to the correct pronunciation and meaning of the word the word, he was awarded the object associated with it.

She also taught Alex the meanings of words, not just the sounds. This was a novel approach as pet parrots typically only learn words for their novelty. The owners don’t care about what they say when they use a particular word. Alex however, on the other hand, was referring to exactly what he meant when he used a particular word.

While many people are impressed by the fact that Alex was able to learn so much however, some scientists have argued that it is unfair to compare Alex to humans in terms of intelligence. They pointed out that although Alex could communicate, he wasn’t capable of using logical phrases like “if there is x, then there is y.”

Although this is still controversial however, the fact is that Alex set the foundation for studies into animal intelligence and consciousness. Alex was one of the most famous and well-known talking parrots until his passing in 2007, at the age 31.

What was Alex’s personality like?

After her research with him, Dr. Pepperberg went on to study other parrots like Wart and Griffin. She is now a professor at the University of Washington, where she continues her pioneering research with birds.

This film has received great critical acclaim and is considered to be one of the most acclaimed documentaries ever produced. It has also won numerous awards, including the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in the year 2019.

In addition to his work with Dr. Pepperberg, Alex also pioneered new avenues of bird intelligence. Alex was able to perform more than 100 vocal label for objects and actions. He was also able to count up to six object sets and demonstrated math skills that were quite advanced at the time for birds.

He was also able to communicate with other animals through signs and had a good understanding of grammar. He utilized a method of teaching known as “rival model” which involved two trainers showing the bird what they were trying to teach it. The trainers would often switch positions so that the bird could interact with them and receive attention from both.

Alex was named a National Hero in 2014 by President Barack Obama after the success of Free Solo. Alex was able to accomplish so many things throughout his life because of his strength of character, as well as his determination to live his life to the fullest.
